Garden City Girls Cruise Past New Hyde Park Without Star Guard
On Senior Night for the Garden City girls’ basketball team it was a fast-moving junior and a sharpshooting sophomore that led the Trojans to a 49-31 win over New Hyde Park on Thursday night.
Junior co-captain Barbara Sullivan led all scorers with 22 points, including 11 of the teams first 16 points. She operated coach Anthony Sparacia’s offense effectively against New Hyde Park’s array of defenses – the Gladiators tried both zone and man-to-man to stop Sullivan.
Garden City, which led by 46-19 entering the fourth quarter, was without standout senior Diana Leondis – one of just four 1,000-point scorers in school history. Nursing a pair of bad ankles, Leondis started the game on Senior Night, but Sparacia quickly removed her just 14 seconds into the game.
Her replacement, sophomore Kim Ryan soon heated up from the outside, pacing the Trojans to a 4-5 start from 3-point land. Ryan finished with 20 points.
For New Hyde Park, junior center Ciara McCullagh led her team with 15 points and was a noticeable presence inside on defense.
The Trojans move to 9-2 in conference, and after an away game early next week, await a first-round playoff opponent having secured the second seed in Conference ABC-I.
